Grab your box. Cut it open carefully - don't rip stuff. Inside? Your Ledger device, USB C cable (or micro USB for older Nano S), three blank recovery sheets, quick start guide, and some legal leaflet. That's it. No extras.
Look, I usually check the cable first. Plug it into your computer - does it charge? Good. Tampered box? Red flag. Return it. In my experience, fakes show up in sketchy packaging. Genuine ones feel solid, screen crisp.
Pass? Power on. For Nano S/X, hold both buttons (left and right). Flex? Long press the side button. Welcome screen pops up. Sweet.
Device says "Set up as new device" or "Restore." Pick new. Don't restore unless you have an old phrase.
Now PIN time. 4-8 digits. I go 8 always - max security. Use the buttons: left/right to pick numbers, both to confirm. Enter twice. Wrong too many times? Wipes itself. Smart, right?
What's next? Recovery phrase. This is your backup. 24 words (Nano S is 24, newer ones too). Device shows 'em one by one. Write on paper. No skips.
Nailed it? Device locks. You're set.. Now connect to the app.
Download from ledger.com only. Never random sites. Desktop for Windows/Mac first - more reliable for initial setup. Mobile's great later for on the go.
I usually do desktop. Plug in USB. Open Ledger Live (now called Ledger Wallet sometimes). "Get started." Picks your device auto. Or manual: Settings > Help > Device setup > Launch.
Update firmware here. Takes 5 mins. Don't skip - old firmware? Vulnerabilities. Hit both buttons to allow Manager.
Apps are blockchain specific. Bitcoin? Install Bitcoin app. Ethereum? Ethereum app. Each -500KB, device holds 5-100 depending on model.

Pro tip: Don't overload. Start with top 3 coins you hold. Gas fees? ETH ~0.0005-0.005 ETH per tx, BTC ~0.00001 BTC, SOL dirt cheap ~0.000005 SOL.
Done? Add accounts. Discover tab > Add account > Pick coin > Sync. Addresses generated. Send tiny test amount first. Like 0.001 BTC. Wait for confirms. Receive works same - generate address on device, confirm tx.
Phone app? App Store/Google Play, official. Get started > Pair device.
Trouble pairing? Restart Bluetooth. Phone too far? Keep close. In my experience, iOS fussier than Android.
Battery! Charge via USB C. Lasts weeks. Low power? Won't pair. Flex screen bigger, touchy. Use side buttons.

Receive: App > Account > Receive. Copy address. Device confirms. Send to it.
Send: App > Send. Amount, address. Device reviews fee/details. Approve buttons. Fees vary - ETH high during peaks, watch gas trackers.
MetaMask hookup? Install Ethereum app. Connect > Ledger. Sign tx on device. Never expose phrase.
Honesty time: Fees suck sometimes. ETH 20-50 gwei normal. Wait for dips.
Passphrase? Advanced. Extra word after 24. Creates hidden wallet. Forget it? Lost forever. I use for big stacks.
Sound paranoid? Good. One slip, poof - funds gone.
